there was too much negative future mother-in-law development. the mother-in-law is portrayed as cunning and mean but she was not cunning enough to nip the romance thing in the bud by not hiring the girl with the troubled past. of course the future father in law could do nothing wrong.
the girl is looking for anyone to satisfy her need to have a family,as sleep with him as soon as possible. if the first love doesn't work out, theres another waiting. i felt sorrow for the family she joined instead of the usual "and everyone lived happily ever after".

This is my first time reading a book by Anita Shreve, but I have seen the movie based on her book Pilots Wife and have heard about her books from watching Oprah. I thought that the main characters were developed well. I liked the way that the author showed what Sydney was thinking when she would talk to people and view things. I thought the author was very clever to use the same home from previous stories in this book.

The book had many twists to it, especially the ending which I won't ruin for you. There was one point that the book made me cry while I was reading it, but then I am a softy. I enjoyed this book, it was a fast read. I recommend this book, especially for reading on the beach in a lounge chair listening to people "Body Surfing" in the ocean.
I was a big fan of Anita Shreve's books and I have read and enjoyed most of them, but I was so disappointed in this novel. At this point I'm tired of these predictable and boring books.

This is definitely the best book yet written by Anita Shreve. Her maturity as an author continues to improve in her writing style, elements and narrative.
