Many great skaters out there use the connection they have to the sport to help them support a variety of good causes. They often do this to raise money for charity, to offer support, and even to help loosen the grip that society has with a bad reputation for skateboarding as a whole.

There are plenty of programs for kids that have terminal illnesses. Making their dreams come true during such tough times is a great way to give back to society. Only in the second year, the efforts of skaters in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have been amazing. They get shops in the areas to donate $150 and they form teams of riders. This brings many supporters to their shops and it also helps to generate a large sum of money for research relating to head trauma. The event was so successful in 2008 that it is already believed to be able to raise twice as much money for 2009. More shop owners want to donate and more skating teams want to be a part of the competition.

Cancer walks and runs have been popular for many years. The ability for skaters to add their own twist to such fund raising events has been very well received in communities. No sport out there is without its controversies, but the problem is that too many spectators focus on those rare occasions instead of the positive. That is exactly what happens when there are controversies within the world of skateboarding.

Scoring is one of the biggest controversies in the world of skateboarding. While every effort is made to get legitimate and fair judges it doesn’t always work that way. When scores are way different with one judge than the others it certainly does raise eyebrows. When even the spectators notice that something is amiss with the scoring process then you know you have a problem.

In their defense, it can be difficult to accurately score skating events. There is so much flexibility and creativity brought in by each performer. You aren’t judging each of them doing the same thing out there. Offering spectators and participants current information on what will be scored often helps them to be more accepting of what those final scores are.

Female skaters continue to feel blindsided even though there are more competitions open to female professionals in the sport than in the past. They don’t feel they get the same opportunities as the males. They don’t get to make as much money and they aren’t often asked to take on endorsements. Such controversies can become quite heated though. Even though ESPN offers the same events for both sexes, they can’t compete against each other. Many feel this is sexist and so the controversy continues.
