Rolling Back Into Fashion

There was a time when roller skates and inline skates were confined to the dimly lit surroundings of the local roller disco. Here, guilty pleasures could be indulged in, in what ultimately seemed a passing fad.

Today though, roller skates have made a comeback, and they’re no longer just hidden in the murk of sweaty leisure centre halls. Like with all things, fashions come and go, but the resurgence in popularity of skating or ‘blading’ is a little more interesting. For years, it was a more alternative sport, an aggressive skating popular with the same groups who would be out skateboarding, and was more heavily focussed on tricks than exercise. A few years back, the popularity in this area declined, but it wasn’t long before they started going mainstream. Now, everyone from young kids to mums and dads can be seen out on roller skates.

There are numerous reasons for this. Firstly, there are the health benefits. Skating can burn as many calories as running while being much more fun and kind to the joints. As exercise goes, it is one of the easiest and most fun ways to find yourself shedding pounds and toning muscles. Heel skates may have brought them to the attention of a younger audience again, then skates and inline skates picked up the interest as the heel gimmick wore thin. The re-emergence of sports such as the roller derby in America, and the accompanying pop culture attention in films such as Whip It have also contributed heavily to new generations discovering the craze and old ones rediscovering it.

Ultimately, it is a fun, rewarding pastime whatever your age, whether you want to grind down railings or simply just escape from the hustle and bustle of life and relax while taking in the world outside. So get your skates on and join in.

Plan B Skateboards-A Welcome Back

Even with the super-low price tag, Plan B boards can go head-to-head with any higher priced brand out there in terms of quality. This company was started in 1991 by a guy who was friends with a bunch of pro skaters. He talked his designs over with his buddies and worked on his boards, making some unique and creative ideas that no make Plan B boards stand out from all the rest. Because of the pro-skater connections, Plan B could also get high-level endorsements. If they’re good enough for the top skaters in the world, you know Plan B boards have to have something going for them.

There’s a sad part to the story. Just 4 years after starting the company, the creator died. In 1995, Mike Ternasky passed away. The entire line of Plan B skateboards had to be stopped because of legal problems regarding the name and designs of the boards. It took 10 years, but in 2005, Plan B skateboards were resurrected, and their new designs were hotter than ever. It was a welcome return. Many pro skaters, as well as regular Joe’s hanging around the half-pipe, were happy when Plan B went back on the market, and celebrated by outfitting themselves with a nice new Plan B deck.

The quality of Plan B boards is just outstanding. The designs are colorful and unique. Among the most popular Plan B lines are the original Plan B and the Acid Trip. If the name gives you any idea, you know the Acid Trip is a wild-looking board. Every skater’s board is an extension of themselves, and that’s why we want a board that looks how we want it to look. Your board is a way of expressing yourself, and Plan B’s wild designs offer something for everyone.

Getting Back to the Basics with Skateboarding

It is often said that everything old is new again. It takes on new life in younger generations and it can create nostalgia in older generations at the same time. The world of skateboarding has gone to the extremes as professionals push the limits. That has transformed the way in which the common individual goes about learning and performing as well.

However, you may have noticed that many people are getting back to the basics of the sport if you follow the world of skateboarding. Many skills and tricks from the 80’s and 90’s that faded out of the scene long ago are now being introduced again. Since it is hard to move forward anymore at this point that we have with the sport, taking a long look at some of the steps taken to get there is always refreshing.

This movement is called by many people as skating old school. That is a term that should be viewed as endearing though instead of in a negative light. The key to really enjoying skateboarding is to be an individual first. This means you take the time to find those moves and tricks that you can relate to. Don’t worry about what other people are doing or if they will find your old school move to be interesting or not. If you like them then by all means perform them.

This is a great way to bring them back to life and to give them a presence again in the world of skateboarding. While the style of what is going on out there varies by location, there are some themes that seem to be spreading all over the place. The fact that as a society many aspects of the 80’s and 90’s are coming back including stone washed jeans, scarves, and big hair; why not include the elements of the skateboarding movement?

Skateboarding: Back From the Sixties With a Vengeance

In the decade of the 1960s skateboarding was known as sidewalk surfing. The sport was akin to surfing and the surf mentality. It went underground during the 1970s and 1980s but came back with a vengeance in the 1990s. The counterculture sport has spun off sportswear and fashion that has become its own industry. Every school around the country has a clique that uses the skateboard as the centerpiece of their lifestyle. These skateboarders not only sit around and watch skateboarding videos all day but they also actually practice the sport by going to skateboard parks which are especially constructed so that the skateboarders can do tricks and aerials just like there hero Tony Hawk.

Just watch a skateboarding video once and you will find out that the sport takes the agility and balance of surfing without the comfort of falling into water. When these guys take a dive they hit rock hard concrete. Sometimes considered daredevils, these skateboarders can do tricks which include 360s in midair, 180s that will lift the skateboarder upside down with the skateboard above their head, and daredevil feats such as hopping their board onto a metal hand rail on a set of stairs. If you want to start the sport of skateboarding it is pretty cheap to begin. You can find a board and safety equipment for under $300 at most sporting-goods shops. The sport only gets expensive when you decide to fall into the skateboarding culture and buy the top line equipment and all the fashion and glamour that go with it.

For some great history on skateboarding I highly recommend watching the movie Dogtown and Z-Boys, a Sony Pictures Classic. The next paragraphs are a direct quote from a review of the movie by Author: Pepper Anne from Orlando, Florida.
