Rolling Back Into Fashion

There was a time when roller skates and inline skates were confined to the dimly lit surroundings of the local roller disco. Here, guilty pleasures could be indulged in, in what ultimately seemed a passing fad.

Today though, roller skates have made a comeback, and they’re no longer just hidden in the murk of sweaty leisure centre halls. Like with all things, fashions come and go, but the resurgence in popularity of skating or ‘blading’ is a little more interesting. For years, it was a more alternative sport, an aggressive skating popular with the same groups who would be out skateboarding, and was more heavily focussed on tricks than exercise. A few years back, the popularity in this area declined, but it wasn’t long before they started going mainstream. Now, everyone from young kids to mums and dads can be seen out on roller skates.

There are numerous reasons for this. Firstly, there are the health benefits. Skating can burn as many calories as running while being much more fun and kind to the joints. As exercise goes, it is one of the easiest and most fun ways to find yourself shedding pounds and toning muscles. Heel skates may have brought them to the attention of a younger audience again, then skates and inline skates picked up the interest as the heel gimmick wore thin. The re-emergence of sports such as the roller derby in America, and the accompanying pop culture attention in films such as Whip It have also contributed heavily to new generations discovering the craze and old ones rediscovering it.

Ultimately, it is a fun, rewarding pastime whatever your age, whether you want to grind down railings or simply just escape from the hustle and bustle of life and relax while taking in the world outside. So get your skates on and join in.

Birdhouse Skateboard Wheels – Roll Into Action

Skateboarding

A wheel is the basic component of all moving objects. There are different types of wheels for different kinds of objects. Each type of wheel is made to serve a specific purpose. In the same manner, different varieties of skateboards have different types of wheels attached to them. The wheels attached to the skateboards are based on the type of skateboarding that one performs. For instance, larger wheels are attached to longboard skateboards for longboarding. Birdhouse skateboard wheels are meant for street skateboarding.

Skateboard wheels may be classified in two catogories – on the basis of their size and on the basis of their hardness. Based on size, skateboard wheels may be categorized into small, medium and large. Small wheels have a diameter between 50mm and 55mm. The diameter of medium wheels lies in the range of 56mm to 60 mm. The larger wheels have a diameter greater than 60 mm. Based on their hardness, skateboard wheels may be graded as hard or soft. The hardness of a wheel is measured in terms of durometer units. The higher the durometer count, the harder the wheel. Skateboard wheels usually have a durometer between 70a and 100a. Most of the Birdhouse skateboard wheels have a diameter between 50mm and 54mm and thus fall into the category of small wheels. There are hard wheels with the durometer reading of approximately 99.

Birdhouse skateboard wheels are made up of premium quality material, which contributes to their high performance. All these factors put together make the Birdhouse skateboard wheels one brand among the various others, which is suitable for performing various tricks with the skateboard.

Get Up and Get Into Mountain Biking- Here’s Some Tips to Get you Started!

So, you want to get fit, experience the joys of the great outdoors and have a few thrills and spills along the way? Sounds like you need to get out there and buy yourself a mountain bike. But with full suspension, hardtail and a myriad of mountain bike models from a huge variety of quality manufacturers, what type of mountain bike is right for you? Here we offer a few simple tips that may just help you decide.

Firstly, is it a mountain bike you are really after? A mountain bike is great if you want to ride off the road and get into the great outdoors. If you will mainly be riding along the road or pathways, then perhaps you need to look elsewhere. But for now, we’ll assume that a mountain bike is what you’re after. So, the first decision you will have to make is whether you want a mountain bike with, or without, suspension.

If you want a bike that will provide a smooth ride when you’re travelling up and down on rugged, rocky trails, then you might consider a full suspension bike. A hardtail bike on the other hand has no rear suspension and may or may not have front suspension forks. Hardtail bikes generally weigh less than full suspension bikes and are usually cheaper. Hardtails are often a better choice for beginners. Another advantage worth pointing out is that you will use less energy when you’re pedalling on a Hardtail. This is because on a full suspension bike, when you push down on the pedal, some of your force is lost when the rear suspension compresses. If you’re not sure which way to go, ask your local bike dealer and test ride both a hardtail and full suspension bike.

Jump Into Scuba Diving For Fun And Adventure

Scuba diving opens up an adventure that’s unimaginable for those with land legs. The wonders that lie beneath the water’s surface are amazing. From the oceans and lakes to hidden caves and more, those who scuba see things that can only be imagined from the land.

Those starting out with scuba are not only advised to take classes, they’re generally required for rental of tanks, purchase of air and so on. Diving isn’t something that’s picked up in 20 minutes either. In fact, even experienced divers continue to take lessons or even prefer to teach them to help themselves stay on top of the game. Remember the world underwater does not belong to humans, so a solid understanding of how to survive is vital.

With proper use of diving equipment such as facemasks and air tanks, humans can descend into the world where sharks and whales rule; a place of shipwrecks, corral beds, colorful fish and more. But this world is inhospitable and requires a keen understanding for safety.

Those starting off will find the road to underwater depths takes some time to master. Recreational scuba divers generally stick to depths of 130 feet or less. Training for this is not as intensive as deep water diving since these dives don’t generally require decompression stops. When required these stops help the body pressurize to the new environmental conditions. Gravity has a new feel on the body under water than it does on land. Just like riding in an airplane, an adjustment period is required.

For those new to scuba, three different scuba certification agencies might be run into. The Professional Association of Diving, or PADI, is perhaps the best known. Then there are the National Association of Underwater Instructors, or NAUI, and the Scuba Schools International, or SSI. All three provide classes to get divers started on a hobby that’s incomparable in adventure.
