So You Want to Learn How to Skateboard

Skateboarding is a lot of fun. Its become so popular that is has evolved from something just for teens to a full-blown sport for adults, too. If you’re good enough, you can make good money at it – just ask Tony Hawk. But anybody can learn to do it – so that’s cool! There is some bad news because it’ll take a whole lot of time to become a pro skater. You can do it if you want, but you know it takes a lot of practice, dedication, and hard work. Here are a few great suggestions to help you on your way. You might need a little time to know which foot goes in front and which is best in the rear. Ok, first – it really makes no difference here if you’re right/left handed. But it is important to know which is your dominant or stronger leg. Think and figure out how you approach something. Think back – when you kick a ball, which side do you do it with? Which leg do you normally begin with when you go up some stairs? If you stumble, which foot do you use to catch and balance yourself? Your answer to those questions is your dominant leg, and it usually stays toward the rear of the board. How you stand has less to do with which way you want to face as you move on the board and more to do with which leg is stronger and sturdier. Don’t be afraid to skate slowly. So many new skateboarders try to do tricks before they are really ready. This often just produces frustration and usually injury. Being able to successfully skate a few blocks doesn’t mean you’re ready for tricks. Even a simple hop on that board is harder than it looks. Take it easy and go slowly, then learn to ride long distances. Learn how to quickly start and gain speed and then stop smoothly without falling down. But if you still take a tumble any time you try to ride the board in more than a short straight line, you are not yet ready for tricks. You’ll need some idea about how you want to be standing on your board. There are a lot of different stances skateboarders can use either for just cruising along or doing tricks. To help, get on your skateboard and just stand still. Look for your most comfortable standing position, one that you can maintain with comfort. Now all you need is to determine how you’ll be pushing off to get some speed. Now try pushing-off with a foot, don’t worry how fast or far. Skaters use different push-off techniques. But for now you just want to find a way that’s works best for you. The basics can seem hard, but only if you don’t put the practice into them. No one was ever an immediate pro. Be patient and learn how to control that board. You control the board, if not – the board controls you, and that’s a recipe for getting hurt.
