STAND UP PADDLE BOARD SURFING

Stand Up Paddle Board Surfing or “SUP’S” for short, is fast becoming a global sport that in some areas are shouting as the New Global Surfing Phenomenon.

Stand Up paddle Boards became quite popular but, it seems only in Hawaii, as the rest of the world was not overly impressed, and as the ’60′s moved to the ’70′s the “Sups” were all but pushed aside by the “short board” era, and a bunch of Aussie’s reaping havoc on the world, by winning surfing titles galore, and in Hawaii’s own back yard, did not sit well with the Hawaiians.

“SUPS”

The Stand Up Paddle Board or “Sups” as it is called originated in Polynesia, but the Hawaiians took it on as their own and developed it in the ’60′s. They began with it to instruct large groups of learners and the higher stance gave them a better viewpoint, to sight the pending swells way out the back. The Stand Up Paddle Board used a single paddle with a long handle that was used to great effect to propel them forward, and not much has changed today. However, today pushing 2010, “Sups” have again grabbed a spot in Global popularity and has been suggested by athletes as the total work out fun machine that you can do standing up. In effect it gives you a strong “core’ work out. You can do it on still water anywhere, or as a supplement to surfing by Paddle Boarding the surf.

For every paddle surfer, it is a challenge to be standing alone in the water. While surfing, you take it as a challenge to paddle out early and try to beat the crowd. Every paddle surfer yearns to reach the line up and then turn towards the horizon. This is the ultimate moment that you can experience as a paddle surfer when you see the magnificent wave roll in towards you as if it was waiting for you to dive in to the water.

As you reach the magnificent wave, no matter big or small, whether ridden or not, there is a thrill that you experience not just in your mind but also your heart. This is a feeling that is uniformly shared by all the paddle surfers.

Thus, surfing with élan and cordiality in water is what paddle surfing is all about and this is what a true paddle surfer looks forward to.

The sport of paddle surfing has over the years challenged the skill and strength of every water sport enthusiast. This sport is an age-old form of water sports which was first experienced by the Hawaiians. They were among the first to be seen playing with their surf boards among the waves.

Till today, the spirit of the sport has remained the same that was practised by the Hawaiians. However, there has been a variation which has been introduced by the surfing enthusiast over the years. This is one sport that has enthralled people with its grace and noble rhythm. The sport of paddle surfing is today also known as beach boy surfing.

C4 Waterman, Honolua Surf and Blue Planet hosted the Stand-Up events for the men, children (juniors) and women.

The sport has grown leaps and bounds. This year’s event had 80 SUP surfers.

“I’m not surprised at all, to be honest” said Todd Bradley, one of the founders of the C4 Waterman company. “From the start, everybody we turned on to the sport got hooked.  So to see all these kids and women and new-comers to the sport … I think its just the beginning.”

Stand-Up Paddle Surfing- also known as SUP is the latest and fastest growing ocean sport. It combines the basic elements of two ocean sports canoe paddling and long-board surfing.

Women surf the SUP with style

In 2007 C4 Waterman’s first year hosting an open SUP event and only one women who surfed along side the men was Maui’s Tiare Lawrence. Ms. Lawrence was of the first female to try SUP surfing. Ms. Lawrence as an outrigger canoe paddler and, short boarder, and Tiare was hand picked as the first top acrobatic performer in the Hawaiian version of Cirque de Soleil at the Ulalena Theatre. When I first saw her surf her C4 SUP surfing in big waves at Makaha, I was like whoa!  I had ridden big waves for years, but this was a new angle of riding waves and Tiare was charging full on with a classic style in big waves with the boys.

Ms. Lawrence said “The fitness aspect is so rewarding.”  When you go surfing you are lying down most of the time, so you work two times more muscles than surfing when you are doing SUP.”
