Things To Keep In Mind While Surfing

Surfing

Like any other adventure sport, surfing has its dangers. After all, you are dealing with a force like the sea and its unpredictable waves. To make sure you make it back in one piece, take surf lessons from experienced individuals, choose the right gear and take it one step at a time. Don’t try doing too much at one time.

Here are a few pointers that will keep you safe to surf again.

Choose the right beach. If you’re a beginner, don’t let the adrenaline get to you soon. Start with the smaller waves and work your way up. Learn to surf cautiously, which will eventually make you a pro. Always choose a beach that has lifeguards. Most beaches have an area marked especially for surfers, be sure to stay in the designated area.

Surfing means tackling the waves and carrying your own body weight through it. You have to be extremely fit to surf, that’s just the way it is. You also have to be strong enough to swim back to shore in case you lose a wave.

Just like drinking and driving is a crime, drinking and surfing is, too. You have to be alert and focused while you surf and take care of yourself at sea. Also remember to eat 45 minutes to an hour before you go surfing; it will help with agility.

A collision with other surfers is a common problem. Be careful of that while you’re out surfing. Always be aware of other surfers, weather changes, water conditions, etc.

Oahu Vacation Packages – The Place Which Gave Surfing To The World

Oahu with its huge sea waves has long been acknowledged as the birth place of surfing. He`e nalu as surfing is known in the Hawaiian language has been around for ages. The earliest reference to it is found as petroglyphs on lava rocks. There are many chants dating back to 1500s about surfing. These chants narrate  stories of great feats that the surfers had.

References have also been found in the journals written by Captain James King,   1779. Surfing as we know has been around for quite some time. Here is a little background on surfing history.

The Hawaiian Tradition of Surfing

In ancient Hawaiian society, surfing pervaded every aspect. It touched the social structure, religion and even myths. Surfing was done on long narrow hardwood boards.

Surfing was such a major part of the ancient Hawaiian society that it even finds mention in the code of taboos, kapu. The Kapu defined the social strata, the royals and the commomners. The surf zones were not untouched from these taboos. Specific beaches were allotted to the chiefs, ali’I and the commoners, maka ai nana, could use beaches specified for them only.

The Demise of Surfing

The play activities of Hawaii, surfing, hula and others saw a decline during the 1820s with the advent of Christian missionaries. They imposed a puritanical code and work ethics. The Kapu system was overthrown by the favorite queen of Kamehameha, Ka`ahumanu and the beaches were freed for everyone, but for more than 150 years no one enjoyed them.

What To Look For In A Surfing Wetsuit

Surfing

Choosing a surfing wetsuit is no easy task as you have to look for a combination of features. A good surfing wetsuit must have the features like safety, temperature adjustment, comfort, to mention a few of them. There is a number of surfing wetsuits available in the market and cab bought either from the stores or from the online stores.

However, you must carefully select a surfing wetsuit, strictly depending on your requirements; whether they are comfortable and lastly, whether these surfing wetsuits are ideal, given the conditions you surf. There can be no compromise on the quality and safety features of the surfing wetsuit and you must be scrupulous while selecting one.

There are a number of guidelines that you can follow while choosing a surfing wetsuit. These guidelines are not exhaustive and you can also have your own.

First, know clearly the conditions you are going to surf in. This is critical. This will depend on how cold it gets normally. However, if the water temperature is between 60 degree Fahrenheit and 70 degree Fahrenheit, choose a 3/2 surfing wetsuit.

If the water temperature is between 55 degree Fahrenheit and 60 degree Fahrenheit, choose a 4/3 surfing wetsuit. If the water temperature is less than 55 degree Fahrenheit, choose a 5/4/3 or 6/5/4 hooded surfing wetsuit.

Second, buy a surfing wetsuit from a local shop. This might be a costlier proposition than buying one online but in case the suit constricts or becomes too loose, you will have to spend more on the treatment of hypothermia.

Third, wear the suit and see how it feels. If it is comfortable, then it is right.

Fourth, wear the surfing wetsuit and create padding like motion to see whether you have the full range of motion.
